Well, it is official. We now have all 3 kids signed up for a sport. I have been trying to put this off as long as possible, but now that Cooper is 4 and he is our most naturally athletic kid, we just couldn't make him hold out any longer. So, Cooper and Karsten are playing soccer and Peyton is playing softball.
Cooper did so well in his first game. He scored 9 goals and just has a natural ability to know where the ball is, how to maneuver it around the field, and the natural competitiveness to drive him to want to always get to the ball as fast as he can and take it from anyone in his way. It was really fun to finally watch him play in a real game with kids his own age.
Karsten's team has played together for four seasons now. They all started together as 4 year olds and have progressed and gelled as a team. They are now at the age where they are trying to run plays and focusing on spreading out of the field and passing the ball. They still play without any specific positions, including goalie, but it is fun to see them maturing in their game. Karsten scored 2 goals and played some really good defense. We laugh how we used to have to bribe him with going out to eat after his game if he would touch the ball just twice during an entire game. Now he is assertive and aggressive on the ball and is really getting so much better.
Peyton has moved up to the "kid-pitch" league, from "coach-pitch", so it is a little different game and we thought she could use fall season to get the hang of things and get ready for spring season. That poor little dear still really struggles to master the skills required for softball. Her throwing, catching, and hitting still don't come naturally for her. She still seems to enjoy it and never complains about going, so we just try to be really patient with her and support her as she seems to do the best she can. I keep thinking about some point it will really click and won't be so much of an effort, but so far she just isn't really there. She was showing some good progress at the end of last season, but she has lost some ground over the summer and it is just more apparent as she moved up leagues. Unfortunately for her, her birthday is 9 days before the cutoff for age groups, so she will always be the youngest for her age bracket.
